Orange County job fair to address youth sports referee shortage

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — You’ve probably seen the viral videos.

Parents and players behaving badly at youth sporting events, parents fighting parents.

Behavior like that is one reason there’s a shortage of referees nationwide, but a job fair happening right now in Orlando is trying to change that.

More than 70 people have preregistered for the event, but officials are expecting hundreds to walk up.

The recruiting fair takes place Monday night at Boone High School.

Orange County Public Schools and RefReps, a company that teaches officiating, are working to entice people to become sports officiants.

The number of licensed Florida High School Athletic Association referees has dropped more than 10% in the past four years.
