Orange County fire crews battle brush fire in Christmas

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Firefighters from Orange County Fire Rescue continued to battle a 125-acre brush fire on Thursday.

The fire is about 80 percent contained, officials said.

The fire was reported around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Christmas in east Orange County.

The Department of Forestry plowed lines around the fire to stop the spread of the flames. Firefighters created those lines, because once vegetation turns black, it can reignite.

"We want to make sure it's all the way black to the fire lines. Everything within our fire lines is burned already. That way there's nothing that can be consumed inside the fire area," said Shane Yarborough, with the Florida Forest Service.

Fort Christmas Road was briefly shut down due to the fire and visibility issues related to the smoke, officials said.

A second brush fire started Wednesday just south of the first one near Christmas.

"There are some hot spots that are going to continue to burn and continue to put up smoke. For the most part, they got a line around all of it, and they're just working to widen that line to make sure that holds," said Yarborough.

The fire threatened one home, but it was not damaged.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
