OIA wheelchair attendants hold one-day strike, citing ‘abysmal’ working conditions

ORLANDO, Fla. — The people who assist elderly and disabled passengers in wheelchairs for two major airlines at Orlando International Airport walked off the job Thursday over what they call “abysmal” working conditions.

One worker said they feel “overworked, understaffed and definitely underappreciated.”

It’s a one-day strike, so it will not continue into Friday, but it is something to keep in mind if you’re flying Thursday evening.

The agents are employed by Baggage Airlines Guest Services, known as BAGS, which is a contractor for several airlines. Workers said they’re paid less than $8 an hour, plus tips.

One worker said many guests have to wait more than an hour because they’re so understaffed, and some are missing their flights.

A spokesperson for BAGS said they are working to address any staffing issues for the holiday season, but would not comment further on employee wages.
