ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Update: Deputy Superintendent Maria Vazquez was named the new superintendent of Orange County Public Schools Tuesday evening.

Vazquez was named to the position after a unanimous vote, though several members expressed their desire for the other finalist, Peter Licata.

Orange County Public Schools is one step closer to naming its new superintendent.

The current superintendent, Barbara Jenkins, announced her retirement in February after a decade in the role.

The district started its search with 15 applicants before deciding on two finalists.

The candidates, Maria Vazquez and Peter Licata, were interviewed by board members on June 21.

Vazquez is currently the deputy superintendent in Orange County.

Licata is the regional superintendent in Palm Beach County.
