ORLANDO, Fla. — Everyone always tries to get ahead at the start of the new year, and this year will be no different.
However, some people worldwide have very different ways of getting that head start.

1. TIME TO WEAR SOME POLKA DOTS
Are you just looking for some standard good luck to start the year? In the Philippines, it is considered good luck to rock polka dots on December 31.
2. ADD A LITTLE HONEY TO IT
This belief goes back to Roman emperors, who would add honey to a dish to ensure sweetness for themselves and those around them in the coming new year.
3. GRAB THAT MISTLETOE AND SLEEP ON IT
If there is one thing the Irish know about, it’s luck. Those looking for a romantic partner should place a sprig on mistletoe underneath their pillow on New Year’s Eve.
4. BREAK OFF A PIECE OF THAT PEPPERMINT PIG
It’s a fairly unique superstition, but one that comes right here from the USA, New York, to be exact. In Saratoga Springs, it’s common to pass around a peppermint pig in a red pouch and take turns breaking off pieces with a tiny hammer. Each piece is taken, and a story of good fortunes is shared to hopefully lead to a New Year of great fortune.
5. OPEN YOUR WINDOWS
It is a very straightforward tradition to open up your windows to let the old year out and the new one in.

6. WATCH THAT FIRST SUNRISE
In the Shinto region of Japan, people gather to watch the first sunrise of the year, which they call Hatsuhinode. They believe watching this will bless them with good fortune and good health.
7. PUT AWAY THE CLEANING SUPPLIES!
Now here is a superstition I can get behind. Don’t worry about washing or dusting. Any luck that could be coming your way until after New Year?
8. CARRY THAT EXTRA SUITCASE AROUND
It can just be for a few minutes, but in Columbia, walking around with an empty suitcase sets you up for a year of new adventures.
9. HOLD BACK THOSE TEARS
Crying is considered a no-no on New Year’s as it is believed to carry sadness into the year ahead.
10. MAKE ALL THE NOISE YOU CAN
Ever wonder why people get so loud in celebrating New Years? Well, it actually is one of the oldest superstitions on this list and was originally to ward off evil sports and omens going into the New Year.
