New program in Florida will help human trafficking and domestic violence survivors

TAMPA, Fla. — Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody and state officials launched a new program to help victims of human trafficking and domestic violence feel safer at home.

‘Project Protect’ will give free doorbell cameras to survivors.

The project is being piloted in both Martin and Hillsborough counties before expanding statewide.

“Survivors of horrific crimes such as human trafficking and domestic violence face traumatic experiences and may be extra wary of strangers and fearful of their abusers coming back to revictimize them. I am launching Project Protect in Hillsborough and Martin counties to help these survivors keep watch over who comes to their homes to provide additional peace of mind.” Moody said.

Informational materials about the pilot program will be available in Clerks of Court offices. Staff will help survivors connect with victim advocates to receive their free doorbell cameras.

Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister said domestic violence, human trafficking, stalking, and sexual assault have tremendous impacts on individuals and their families.

“Programs like Project Protect are crucial in providing much-needed assistance and protection to those who have suffered from these heinous acts. We must continue to work together and support initiatives that help prevent and address these crimes,” Chronister said.
