VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — The crackdown on pop-up events is intensifying in Volusia County.

Officials say the unsanctioned, unlicensed and unpermitted events create a problem with traffic. Now, a state representative is working on a plan, House Bill 1435, to make it easier for police to keep things under control.

In 2020, thousands of people piled onto State Road A1A in Daytona Beach, blocking traffic and passing out fake cash. Several people were shot.
In 2021, thousands of trucks came to Daytona Beach where people blocked traffic, did burnouts on the road and broke out in fights.
In the bill, Rep. Tom Leek filed talks about doubling fines, towing vehicles and going after the promoters of the events to charge them the costs for police overtime and cleanup.

It’s legislation that Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood supports.
“We need a way to fight back, and I think this legislation does that,” he said.
