New gondola transportation system possible at Disney parks

ORLANDO, Fla. — Disney has been tight-lipped about a series of permits it has filed for its property, but an internet writer who specializes in reporting on the company has an idea of what the filings might mean.

“There’s these buildings in the permits that clearly look like turn buildings, if you have ever seen a skyway or gondola system,” Tom Corless said.

The permits were filed to deal with storm water issues, but the shape and locations of the buildings fit the design for a cable transportation system that would connect Epcot with Hollywood Studios, Corless said.

“This is a modern system,” he said. “These are big, enclosed cars that can hold a lot of people.”

Right now, visitors depend on busses, boats or their own feet to get from Epcot to Hollywood Studios.

Corless believes it is unlikely that Disney would expand its iconic monorail system to bridge the gaps between the theme parks.

“The monorail system’s really expensive,” he said. “Those concrete beams cost a ton.”
