OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. — Rep. Fred Hawkins plans to step down, he told Channel 9 Tuesday.

Hawkins said on Twitter he is looking forward to becoming the next President of South Florida State College.

He told Channel 9 the vote for him to get the job isn’t until June 7, but he is the only finalist.
“I feel that the job would require someone’s fulltime attention, just as I treated it,” Hawkins said.

If Hawkins steps down, a special election would need to be held to fill his vacancy.
Hawkins tweeted, “Pages turn and new chapters begin. I am looking forward to becoming the next President of South Florida State College. My time as an elected official has been a highlight of my life, especially serving in the Florida House.”
