WINTER PARK, Fla. — A 23-year-old man accused of squatting in a Winter Park couple's condo and then attacking them when they returned from a weekend getaway was behind bars Wednesday, police said.

Investigators said Kayin Harper was sleeping on the couch of a unit at the Lake Killarney condo complex when the owners returned home.

Harper is accused of punching the 75-year-old man and choking his wife before being tackled by neighbors, police said.

Witness John McMillan said Harper was talking but wasn’t making any sense as residents held him at bay awaiting the arrival of police.

“(He was) muttering incoherent, delusional comments about the killers, (how) they’re altering your mind, and things like that,” McMillan said.

When he appeared before a judge, Harper allegedly continued his bizarre behavior.

When they judge asked for the suspect’s name, Harper initially responded, “No,” before giving his name after the judge asked again.

Later in the hearing, Harper rolled his eyes at the judge and refused an attorney.

“I’m good,” he told the judge. “You can finish your, um, case. You can finish.”

Harper was being held without bond at the Orange County Jail on charges of false imprisonment, aggravated battery of a person older than 65, two counts of burglary with assault or battery, credit card theft and providing false identification to a law enforcement officer.
