Lake County Sheriff Peyton Grinnell said early Saturday that one deputy was killed and two other deputies were injured Friday evening in a shooting at a home near Eustis.

Peyton said that at about 8 p.m. Friday, deputies were called to a “disturbance in progress” at a home on Brookside Drive near Eustis.

He said that while deputies were investigating the situation, they were alerted to an incident unfolding “a couple houses down.”

Deputies noticed a back door had been kicked in, and they heard a “commotion” in the home, Peyton said.

He said deputies entered the home and were met with a “barrage of gunfire.”

“They were ambushed,” Peyton said.

One deputy was shot and the other deputies retreated, the sheriff said.

Peyton said that many more deputies responded, forming a “rescue team” to retrieve the injured deputy, who was trapped inside the home.

He said the deputies were met with a “hail of gunfire,” and a second deputy was shot.

Peyton said that the deputies retreated and the SWAT team was mobilized because they knew that they were “dealing with a scene with a lot of firepower.”

He said that the first deputy who was struck was shot in the shoulder and is now stable.

The second deputy was shot in the abdomen, groin and arm and is in serious/critical condition after having undergone surgery.

Peyton said that a third deputy died from his injuries.

He said that two suspects in the home were all killed in the shooting and a third suspect was taken to a hospital in an unknown condition.

“It was a very violent scene,” Peyton said. “It’s just horrific when you have one of your own inside the home that you can’t get to ... It was a chaotic scene from the start to the end.”

He said that the disturbance was domestic in nature and that multiple guns were discovered inside the home --”everything from long guns to hand guns.”

Peyton said that deputies have been to the home in the past for animal enforcement complaints but never for any violence.

None of the people involved have been publicly identified, but the deputies’ families have been notified of what happened.

Peyton said that the deputy who was killed began his career as a police explorer and was a military veteran.

Friday night’s shooting was the Lake County Sheriff’s Office’s first line-of-duty death since February 2005.

“Keep the men and women of this agency in your prayers,” Peyton said.
