Motorcyclist killed in Port Orange crash

PORT ORANGE, Fla. — Police are investigating after a motorcyclist was killed in a crash in Port Orange late Monday afternoon.

The crash happened shortly before 5 p.m. on the east side of the Dunlawton bridge, according to police.

Authorities said 21-year-old Shayne Laidler was traveling eastbound over the Port Orange Bridge on his 2003 Kawasaki motorcycle at a high rate of speed. Laidler was attempting to overtake eastbound traffic via the inside shoulder of the bridge when his motorcycle struck the median concrete barrier, causing Laidler to lose control, authorities said.

Laidler was ejected from the motorcycle and was pronounced dead at the scene, investigators said.

Police shut down both directions of the bridge following the crash, but it has since reopened.
