More than 17,000 Floridians have died from COVID-19 as state reports 5,200 new cases

ORLANDO, Fla. — As of Friday, more than 17,000 Florida residents have died from COVID-19 since the pandemic began.

The state’s total death toll grew by 54 to reach 17,224 on Friday, with all but 210 of those deaths being Florida residents. Of the most recent deaths, 27 happened in Central Florida.

“Coronavirus

The state also added 5,245 new cases of the virus on Friday, including more than 900 in Central Florida.

Total since the pandemic began there have now been 832,625 coronavirus cases in the state.

An additional 29,721negative test results noted in Thursday’s data brought the total number of negative tests to 5,517,240 in Florida since testing for the virus began earlier this year.

On Thursday, the U.S. set a record with more than 116,000 new COVID-19 infections reported in a single day.
