Men accused of scamming elderly at center of Leesburg homicide investigation

NOW PLAYING ABOVE

Two men who were once investigated for allegedly trying to take advantage of an elderly Lake County woman are at the center of a homicide investigation.
Leesburg police believed someone killed Bernadine Montgomery, 84.
Lake County deputies were called to look into claims that Montgomery had been financially scammed.
Deputies said Anthony Spasaro and William Nevadomski had ripped off elderly people in the past, and they had been hanging around Montgomery.
A report was filed months before Montgomery disappeared, stating that Lake County deputies were also concerned that she "may be the victim of elderly exploitation."
Channel 9 found out that Spasaro had been arrested for working as a contractor without a license and failing to get workers compensation insurance.
Nevadomski faced numerous drug and theft charges.
Investigators said they met with Montgomery, and she seemed to understand what they were saying but "refused to prosecute the men."
Montgomery claimed she wasn’t being taken advantage.
Police admit they are talking to a number of persons of interest, but they wouldn’t reveal if the two were among that group.
Investigators have only named Jeremy Gentry, the man accused of stealing the Montgomery's car, as a person of interest.
But late Thursday, the charges were dropped against Gentry, who bonded out of jail.
Gentry told detectives he doesn't remember what happened to Montgomery because of his drug habit.
