Melbourne woman dies after being hit by car

MELBOURNE, Fla. — The Melbourne Police Department is investigating after a woman was hit by a car and killed Tuesday morning.

Police responded to the intersection of Babcock Street and Silver Palm Avenue at around 11:30 a.m. for reports of a crash involving a pedestrian.

Officers arrived on scene to find 59-year-old Jacqueline A. Haynes suffering from life-threatening injuries.

The woman was taken to a hospital where she later died.

Melbourne Traffic Homicide investigators say it appears the driver, identified as 32-year-old Jared Gayle, was traveling northbound on Babcock when he struck Haynes.

Police say drugs or alcohol do not appear to have been a factor in the crash.
