ORLANDO, Fla. — The sentencing trial for convicted police killer Markeith Loyd continued Wednesday.
Loyd was convicted of killing Lt. Debra Clayton last month.

5:45 p.m. update
Court is in recess for the day.
5:20 p.m. update
Forensic neurologist Dr. Geoffrey Colino testified that he believes Loyd has frontal lobe disorder and suffers from psychosis with a hyper-focus on religious teachings.
“He remarked Christianity was worshipping the devil... and obsessed with the Trinity and Sodom and Gomorrah,” Colino said.
Colino said he believes Loyd has a distorted view of the world and is not able to conform his behavior to the laws.

3:30 p.m. update
Court is back in session. Dr. Colino is continuing his testimony.
3:05 p.m. update
Court is in a brief 15-20 minute recess. The judge said she called the recess becuase two jurors were falling asleep.

The state calls forensic neurologist Dr. Geoffrey Colino to the stand.

The state calls pathologist Dr. William Anderson to the stand.
1:40 p.m. update
Court has resumed following a lunch break. The defense is continuing to call witnesses.
11:50 a.m. update
For about an hour on the stand, Loyd’s sister talked about their rough upbringing in Carver Shores. She talked about how their mother was rarely around so they had to fend for themselves, and got into fights regularly in their neighborhood. She said when they moved to Pine Hills, things were so bad Markeith chose to steal and sell drugs to provide for all his siblings.

10:40 a.m. update
Markeith Loyd’s sister, Tonya Loyd, is now testifying on the stand.

10:30 a.m. update
The state calls Det. Greg McQuitter to the stand. He was present when Loyd was apprehended in January 2017.
10 a.m. update
The state calls Emma Watford, a retired from Florida Department of Corrections mental health medication nurse, to the stand. Watford said she’s known Loyd through her sons since the 1990s.
9:50 a.m. update
The state is continuing to call witnesses to testify in the penalty phase of the trial.
ORIGINAL STORY
The prosecution rested its case on Tuesday, and now the defense is expected to call 20 witnesses to convince the jury to keep Loyd off death row.
We’ve already heard from one of the witnesses, one of Loyd’s childhood friends.

We also expect relatives and psychiatrists to take the stand in the courtroom over the next few days.
Defense attorneys began their case by bringing up issues from Loyd’s childhood, including his childhood friend who said they were out casing cars for their rims one day when they were approached by a man who terrorized them.
Loyd’s friend and his brother both said they loved him and would visit him if he was in prison.

The prosecution still has more witnesses.
They will work to convince the jury that Loyd belongs on death row.

Though the prosecution rested its case on Tuesday, it still has rebuttable witnesses. They are expected to speak later this week.
