INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, Fla. — Waiting for visiting hours would have probably been a lot easier.
A 24-year-old Vero Beach man told police he was just trying to visit friends in the Indian River County Jail when he smashed his car into the front door and then into a fence, which he tried to climb before getting tangled in razor wire.
Patrick Rempe was taken to the hospital after the incident and is facing numerous charges.
Raw: Indian River County Jail break-in attempt
Surveillance video shows Rempe’s 2002 Toyota smash into the glass doors of the jail’s Building C. The glass breaks but the doors hold, even after the car is revved and strains against the door.
Clouds of smoke from the car’s tires billow into the building before it backs out of the frame.
Rempe is accused of then driving at a high rate of speed into a security fence outside Building E at the jail. When he was not able break through with the car, Rempe got out and scaled the fence.
He became entangled in razor wire lining the top of the fence and had to be rescued by emergency workers.
He told deputies he was “high on flakka” and was trying to visit friends in the jail.
He is facing charges of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, battery on a law enforcement officer, three counts of felony criminal mischief, leaving the scene of a crash with property damage and driving under the influence.
Additional charges are possible, the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office said.
