Man goes overboard on cruise ship out of Port Canaveral, officials say

PORT CANAVERAL, Fla. — A man reportedly went overboard Thursday on a cruise ship that operates out of Port Canaveral.

Norwegian Cruise Lines confirmed with Channel 9 that a 51-year-old passenger went overboard on Thursday.

Officials said the incident happened around 3 p.m. as the Norwegian Epic ship sailed from Jamaica to the Bahamas.

“The authorities were immediately notified, and a search and rescue operation under the guidance and oversight of the Bahamas Rescue Coordination Center went underway,” a Norwegian Cruise Lines spokesperson said.

Sadly, officials said a search for the man was unsuccessful.

Officials confirmed the man was traveling with a large group and his family on board.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones during this difficult time,” a Norwegian Cruise Lines spokesperson said.

The ship was eventually cleared to continue its voyage.

According to its website, the Norwegian Epic ship departs for Caribbean destinations out of Port Canaveral.
