Man arrested in Daytona Beach mail fraud scheme

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Authorities said they've arrested a man who is a member of a large check fraud ring that specializes in stealing mail from mailboxes in four central Florida counties.

According to a report, 33-year-old Carl Croyl is one of 15 people who Volusia County Sheriff's investigators say have been taking mail in Volusia, Flagler, Seminole and St. Johns counties. He was arrested Tuesday.

Officials said the group committed $30,000 to $40,000 in check fraud. The investigation began in October.

According to investigators, the suspects drive around targeting mailboxes that have their flags raised. They open the mail looking for checks, and then alter them to reflect a different payee and a higher amount.

Croyl is in jail charged with multiple felonies.
