FHP: Man with suspended learner’s permit driving double the speed limit caused crash that killed 5

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Troopers said a man with a suspended learner’s permit driving more than double the posted speed limit on an Orange County road caused a March 2021 crash that killed two women and three children.

The crash happened at the intersection of Gaymar Drive and Clarcona Ocoee Road, which has a posted speed limit of 45 mph.

In an arrest affidavit, troopers said Osbaldo Patino Vazquez, 20, was driving 96 mph in a Chevy Suburban on Clarcona Ocoee Road seconds before he crashed into a Hyundai Sonata that was attempting to make a left-hand turn.

Investigators said five passengers in the Sonata were ejected from the car and all of them died at the scene. The car’s driver was the only person in the car not ejected and the car’s sole survivor.

Investigators said the three children who died in the crash were 6 months old, 4 years old and 5 years old. The two women killed were 25 and 30.

Pastor Anthony Oliver said his wife, Shaun, was behind the wheel, and two daughters and three young grandchildren were killed in the crash.

“One minute my babies were here and the next minute they are gone,” he said.

Two months later, his wife, the crash’s sole survivor, died from a medical condition.

Troopers said Vazquez was the only person inside the Suburban at the time of the crash, which didn’t comply with the requirement of his learner’s permit. Troopers also said his permit had already been suspended at the time of the crash.

Vazquez was arrested Tuesday, almost a year after the crash, and was charged with five counts of vehicular homicide. A judge set his bond at $125,000.

After the crash, Orange County Public Workers conducted a study of the intersection and determined a traffic light needed to be installed there to improve safety. Engineers also installed pavement markings showing the speed limit and speed feedback signs approaching the intersection.
