Man accused of forcing way into home in The Villages, stealing resident’s purse, car

SUMTER COUNTY, Fla. — A Sumter County man is accused of forcing his way into a home in The Villages and making off with the resident’s belongings.

Michael Prouty, 39, was arrested by the Ocala Police Department after investigators said Prouty forced his way into a home and stole the victim’s purse, cell phone and the victim’s car from their garage.

Investigators said the car was then seen in Ocala and Ocala police began their pursuit.

They said Prouty crashed and ran away, attempting to steal another car before officers arrested him.

Prouty is facing charges of fleeing and eluding, attempted carjacking, crash involving injuries, and resisting arrest by the Ocala Police Department and will be charged in Sumter County with home invasion, battery on a person over 65, and grand theft of a vehicle.
