Local doctor says majority of new COVID-19 cases are in children

ORLANDO, FLA. — Health experts are raising concerns over how the Labor Day holiday will impact the number of COVID-19 cases.

Dr. Tim Hendrix with AdventHealth said he expects new COVID-19 cases to rise in the coming weeks.

The positivity rate in Orange County is dropping but Hendrix said doctors are still worried.

“The concerning thing is that slow decline has leveled off, even coming into the holidays. Things are not getting much better in the last week,” he said.

Hendrix said a lot of people are still coming to CentraCare facilities and asking for a COVID-19 test.

Hendrix said most of the new cases are primarily in one group of patients.

“Children still make up the majority of positive tests. Young children, school age children are most likely positive at this time,” Hendrix said.

Hendrix said doctors are monitoring child cases closely because it could lead to an overall increase in cases.

This comes as the virus has led to schools closing across the country due to a high number of cases.
