The city of Leesburg wants to move forward with expanding where mixed-use development can occur in its downtown.

Leesburg City Commissioners voted Dec. 9 to advance to a final vote on changes to the city’s comprehensive plan which would allow 131 acres to be developed as mixed-use — expanding it from the 26 acres currently with that zoning in the city’s urban core.

Kandi Harper, deputy director of planning and zoning for the city of Leesburg, said the city had gotten inquiries from people who wanted to increase the potential development density in the city’s downtown, which could lead to more residents supporting businesses there and an increase for the city’s property tax revenues.
