GROVELAND, Fla. — A marsh fire burning near Silver Eagle Road in Groveland has grown to 250 acres and remains 10% contained, according to the Florida Forest Service.
Channel 9 reporter Chloe Morrissey said the fire remained active Wednesday evening, with a large plume of smoke visible from the area.
Winds also increased during the evening, creating additional concerns for crews working to contain the flames.
Multiple helicopters were seen circling the marsh and dropping water on the fire. A Florida Forest Service official said two agency helicopters were conducting water drops while three bulldozers created containment lines around the fire.
Firefighters are not actively working inside much of the marsh because the ground is mostly swamp. Fire crews were positioned near surrounding neighborhoods as a precaution.
Video from earlier Wednesday showed the fire burning more intensely before the aerial response helped reduce some of the flames and smoke.
One nearby resident said it was reassuring to see crews responding with helicopters and other equipment.
The Florida Forest Service is continuing to investigate what caused the fire.
Channel 9 will continue monitoring the response and provide updates as more information becomes available.
Residents are also asked to avoid the area so crews can work safely and have room to respond. No evacuation information or reports of injuries were immediately released.
