Lake County votes to block move of Confederate statue from Washington

Lake County leaders passed a resolution Tuesday to keep the Confederate statue of Gen. Edmund Kirby Smith from being brought to the county.

The board originally voted 3 to 2 to bring the statue to the Lake County Historical Museum from Washington, D.C.

Community leaders fought the decision and held marches and rallies against relocating the statue.

After the killing of George Floyd in May and the outrage that followed, calls around the country became even louder to remove confederate statues and flags.

So commissioners decided to revisit the issue and voted 4 to 1 to pass a resolution to send a letter to Gov. Ron DeSantis asking him to find a new home for the statue.

“I thank each and every one of you for the decision you made because it is the right decision,” said Mae Hazelton, with Lake Voices of Reason.
