Lake County educators over 50 receive COVID-19 vaccine

LAKE COUNTY, Fla. — Educators over the age of 50 are getting their COVID-19 vaccines.

On Wednesday, the Florida Department of Health opened up two sites for Lake County Schools employees in that age group.

For some, they were truly excited because they were really looking forward to getting the vaccine.

Others said they lined up and got the shot because they felt it was their duty in the effort to protect their students and co-workers.

Charles Witsman has been a teacher for 24 years. He said with the constant contact with students, the health risk was his big concern, but believes the vaccine will bring him peace of mind.

“I think about this all the time and we want to take care of our students,” said Witsman, who teaches economics and U.S. government at Tavares High School

The opportunity comes two days after Gov. Ron DeSantis lowered the age from 65 to 50 for educators.
