LAKE COUNTY, Fla. — Despite outrage across the country about monuments, statues and even military bases named after or honoring prominent Confederate figures, Lake County leaders says a statue of a Confederate general is still on its way there.

Lake Voices of Reason has been fighting for years to keep the statue of Confederate Gen. Edmund Kirby Smith out of the Lake Historical Museum.
In 2016, then-Gov. Rick Scott signed a bill to remove the statue from Statuary Hall in Washington, D.C. and replace it with a statue of civil rights pioneer Mary McLeod Bethune. Lake County then seized the opportunity to bring the statue of Smith here.
