5-year-old boy airlifted to hospital after being hit by drunk driver, police say

LAKE COUNTY, Fla. — The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a crash that left a mother in serious condition, a 5-year-old boy in critical condition and a man behind bars.

Troopers arrested Daksh Wadhwa on multiple charges, including driving under the influence causing serious bodily injury.

The crash happened near the intersection of County Road 448 and Shirley Shores Road in Lake County around 8:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Troopers said a BMW was traveling westbound on CR 448 and a Honda was traveling eastbound on CR 448 when the driver of the BMW veered into the eastbound lane.

According to a news release, both drivers swerved to the left to avoid a collision but crashed into one another.

The driver of the BMW, Wadhwa, remained at the scene and sustained minor injuries.

The driver of the Honda was transported to a hospital with serious injuries.

The passenger of the Honda, a 5-year-old boy, was airlifted to Arnold Palmer Children’s Hospital in critical condition.

Troopers said that Wadhwa’s Breathalyzer sample came back as 0.189. The legal limit in Florida is 0.08.

Wadhwa is being charged with driving under the influence causing serious bodily injury, and possession of cocaine.
