LAKE COUNTY, Fla. — The Florida Forest Service said Thursday’s Lake County brush fire was caused by an unauthorized escape burn.
The Royal Trails wildfire was contained at 141 acres, although officials originally believed it had reached close to 300.
Seven homes were threatened, one sustained damage and an out building and gazebo were destroyed.
Families were evacuated from their homes and a bear cub dubbed “Smokey Junior” was found abandoned in the fire.
Pictures and video shows the scorched areas and damage to several homes.
Crews were continuing to improve lines and put out hot spots.
Firefighters and the Florida Forest Service worked for nearly eight hours to get the blaze under control.
