January already holds record for deadliest month in Florida since the pandemic began: See the latest numbers

ORLANDO, Fla. — Florida reported an additional 229 deaths on Friday as the state’s deadliest month of the pandemic thus far nears its end.

With only two days left in the month, the state has reported more than 4,400 deaths since Jan. 1. That’s already more than the state reported in August, which previously held the record with 4,100 deaths.

Of the latest deaths, 68 were reported in Central Florida with three counties reporting double-digit death increases. The largest increase was reported in Lake County with 36 deaths there alone.

The state’s total death toll from the virus is now 26,685.

On Friday, the state also reported 10,976 new cases of the virus.
