It could be days before the water recedes enough for people to know the full extent of the damage.

On Friday, Channel 9 visited the Fawn Lake community just north of Main Street in Mims, where some homes are surrounded by water.

“I feel so helpless,” resident Phyllis Dearborn said. “I’m sitting in the house and I want to get started, but I can’t. It’s still two feet deep in there. Until this water subsides and starts pulling out, there’s nothing to do.”

The neighborhood, despite being flooded now, is not in a flood plain.

While residents in some Central Florida counties are eligible for FEMA assistance, Brevard County residents are not. However, county officials are working with the state and FEMA to explore that possibility.

“It’s my home and I love it here,” Dearborn said. “I’ll fix it, but it sure would be nice to have some help if I can get it.”
