OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. — Ventura Elementary School was damaged in a fire late Thursday night, according to Osceola County Fire Rescue.
The fire broke out just before 9 p.m. at the school on Waters Edge and Poinsettia drives in Kissimmee.
Crews were cleaning up the damage Friday.
The part of the playground that burned is on the far end of the school campus, close to the Eagle Bay community.
"When I looked at the back of the sliding door, I saw the playground on fire," said resident Isaac Mejia.
The Osceola County fire chief said the state fire marshal was called in.
Meija said he and his wife were home with their three elementary-school-aged children when they heard a boom.
So far, there's no word on a possible cause or whether the incident could have been arson.
"I brought my ladder out and looked at the playground. I started thinking the worst. I thought they probably threw gasoline, lit something up, because it was pretty much burning in a pattern," he said.
Officials said the equipment on the playground is worth about $60,000.
