‘I lost it’: Orlando mother shares details after a woman shot at her and her children on Monday

ORLANDO, Fla. — An Orlando mother shared the details about the moment she and her daughters ducked for cover when she said a woman started shooting at them.

Channel 9 first showed you a standoff that police said happened after a shooting Monday, as it was breaking on Eyewitness News at Five.

That mother told Channel 9 she and her children were only feet away from their front door when this happened.

“She’s looking at me, and the gun is pointing at me and my children, and she’s firing it,” she said. “That’s when I lost it.”

This happened on Beech Avenue near Bentley Street in Orlando.

The mother said she and her daughters became victims of Janita Huckaba -- Just for standing outside their home.

Around 4:10 p.m. Monday in the 300 block of Beech Street, officers arrived in response to a shooting call. The caller told police an adult woman attempted to shoot at them and then returned to her apartment, according to a news release.

“I hate that my six- and seven-year-old have to sit and have this conversation about, oh, she was shooting at us because or Mommy had to pick us up and running because -- that’s crazy,” she said.

The mother said she and her children were setting up a memorial for a friend who died from a previous shooting. Right after, Huckaba fired a gun nearby before pointing it at them, forcing them to run for their lives.

“My seven-year-old is the one who actually told me what happened-- she said no, Mommy, she didn’t shoot in the air-- she was shooting at that red car, and she turned around and started shooting at us,’ the mom said.

This all unfolded moments before Orlando Police surrounded Huckaba’s apartment complex on Beech Avenue, where she held herself and three kids inside for hours.

According to the report, Huckaba got into an argument with her grandmother Before she pointed the gun at the woman and her kids and ran inside, locking the door behind her.

Police said no one was hurt by any of the bullets.

But the trauma in this neighborhood will stay after experiencing all of this just hours ago.

Huckaba was arrested Monday and faces charges of aggravated assault with a firearm and attempted homicide.
