ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — The last place you would expect to find teenagers on a weekend morning is at school.
That’s exactly where 16-year-old Nina Melendez was at 5:30 a.m. on a Saturday.
Like many others who showed up at Colonial High Schools, she wanted to get in line early to get her COVID-19 vaccine.

“I’m excited because I need it to travel to Puerto Rico right now,” Melendez said.
Orange County Public Schools hosted the vaccine events at three high schools specifically targeting teens.
Scot Howat with Orange County Schools says the schools were chosen with the help of the Florida Department of Health in Orange County.

“We worked with the department of health in Orange County to determine which schools they wanted to focus on, in the areas that we felt really needed to have additional resources,” Howat said.
In all, 500 vaccines were administered at the Colonial High location and an additional 200 each for Jones and Evans Saturday.
This week’s vaccination events at @CHS_OCPS @EvansHS_OCPS & @Jones_OCPS saw 1,536 students, their families and members of the community coming out to get their Pfizer vaccination against COVID-19. 2nd doses are scheduled in 3 weeks at the same locations. #IGotMyShot @OrangeCoFL
