ORLANDO, Fla. — Update:

Tuesday was the hottest day of the year for Central Florida.

The National Weather Service said Tuesday that temperatures in Orlando had reached 99 degrees which breaks the old record high temperature of 98 degrees for the date, which was last set in 1987.

By 3 p.m., our heat index had already hit 114 degrees in Cocoa Beach.

The triple digit heat index numbers could linger through midnight in some areas.

Some parts of Central Florida could be fortunate enough to see a brief shower to cool things down for the late afternoon or late evening.

Osceola, Brevard, Volusia, Flagler and east Orange counties have the highest chance of receiving a shower.

“We may see the heat advisory’s each day this week,” certified meteorologist George Waldenberger said. “This is oppressively hot -- even by Florida’s standards.”

Elsewhere, things remain quiet in the tropics.

There are four tropical waves between the Caribbean and the Atlantic, but none of them show a very high chance of development or organizing into a low pressure area within the next week.

By the end of next week and beyond, we will watch more tropical waves moving off the west coast of Africa that could have a higher potential for becoming organized.

“Right now we’re in pretty good shape,” Waldenberger said. “Activity usually starts picking up mid-August.”
