TIMELINE: Court in recess after first full day of testimony in Markeith Loyd murder trial

ORLANDO, Fla. — Testimony is continuing in Markeith Loyd’s second murder trial.

Loyd is accused of fatally shooting Lt. Debra Clayton in 2017. At the time, Loyd was on the run for killing his pregnant ex-girlfriend, Sade Dixon. See live updates from the courtroom below:

5:05 p.m. update

Court is in recess. Testimony will resume Wednesday at 9:30 a.m.

5 p.m. update

The state calls its final witness of the day, Shawn Williams, a forensic video analyst for the Orlando Police Department.

Williams responded to the Walmart where Clayton was shot and killed and the apartment complex where Loyd is accused of shooting at an officer to retrieve video from both scenes.

4:35 p.m. update

The state calls a man who lived in Royal Oaks, the apartment complex where a deputy said he lost track of Markeith Loyd on the day Clayton was killed.

The man said he heard a man talk at him while he was walking up to his apartment building. As he started to go up the stairs, he said a man matching the description of Loyd held a gun in his face and asked for his keys.

“I took the keys and I threw them up in the air,” he said, before taking off running to his apartment.

The man said the suspect took off in his car.

4:10 p.m. update

Orange County Sheriff’s Office Cpt. Joseph Carter said he followed the car he believed to be driven by the suspect Markeith Loyd into an apartment complex.

Carter said when he went to get out of his car to confront the suspect, the suspect fired two shots at him causing Carter to get back into his car.

After the shots were fired, Carter said the suspect ran away and he didn’t see him again.

4 p.m. update

The state calls Orange County Sheriff’s Office Cpt. Joseph Carter to the stand. He said he was on his way to work when he heard the dispatch for help at the Walmart where Clayton was shot and killed.

Carter said he decided to head to the Walmart to respond before changing directions when he heard a signal reporting the direction the suspect headed. While he was driving south of North Pine Hills road, he said he spotted a vehicle matching the description of the suspect’s vehicle.

3:40 p.m. update

The state calls Orlando Police Department patrol officer Branden Thornton to the stand. Clayton was his patrol supervisor the day she was shot and killed.

The state is asking him questions about what happened the day Clayton was killed.

2:20 p.m. update

The state is playing surveillance footage from inside the Walmart store with Orlando police Sgt. Peter Cadiz on the stand narrating the movements of Clayton, key witnesses and Loyd inside the store prior to the shooting.

2 p.m. update

Sgt. Peter Cadiz, who was the lead homicide detective with the Orlando Police Department on the day Clayton was shot and killed, is testifying about what happened that morning at the Walmart.

1:40 p.m. update

Testimony is resuming in the Markeith Loyd murder trial after a lunch break.

A 911 operator is now on the stand.

Noon update

Testimony is breaking for lunch and will resume at 1:30 p.m.

11:10 a.m. update

The state calls Julia Johnson to the stand to testify. In January 2017, she worked at the Walmart store where Clayton was shot and killed.

The state is questioning her about what she saw the morning Clayton was shot.

10:50 p.m. update:

The state calls Timothy Stephens to the stand to testify. In January 2017, Stephens worked as an asset protection manager at the Walmart where Clayton was shot and killed.

He is testifying about the security cameras that were in place at the store at the time.

10:10 a.m. update:

Witness Takeshia Bryant is testifying to what she saw at the Walmart the day Lt. Debra Clayton was shot and killed.

Bryant said she recognized Loyd inside the story and alerted Clayton that he was inside in the store.

ORIGINAL STORY:

Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for Loyd.

He was sentenced to life in prison for Dixon’s murder.

Jury selection lasted more than two weeks before 12 jurors and six alternates were chosen on Monday.

Jurors were told to pack a suitcase, because as soon as they were picked they were sequestered immediately.

The trial is expected to last up to three weeks.
