Study: Most Orange County residents feel safe at home, but that number is dropping

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Members of the Orange County Citizens Task Force announced the 2023 Community Crime Survey results in their meeting on Friday.

The results show that most Orange County residents feel safe in their homes, but that number is dropping.

Officials said 2,508 surveys were filled out.

Most people who filed it out said they feel crime is increasing. Half as many people said they feel safe compared to three years ago, and twice as many people said they felt unsafe or very unsafe.

Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings reconvened the task force earlier this year in response to an increase in gun violence in the county. The task force first convened in 2020 to engage faith-based leaders and community-based organizations met to brainstorm solutions and strategies to reduce and prevent gun violence and violent crime.

Leaders said the results of the survey seem mostly positive with the overwhelming majority saying they feel safe and think police are doing a good job.

“Are we perfect? No. But certainly, we’re doing a lot of things to keep our community safe,” Sherriff John Mina said. “And the survey did show that most people think or feel that they are safe in Orange County.”
