ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Markeith Loyd’s second murder trial continued on Monday.
Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for Loyd in the fatal shooting of Lt. Debra Clayton in 2017. At the time, Loyd was on the run for killing his pregnant ex-girlfriend, Sade Dixon.

He was sentenced to life in prison for Dixon’s murder.
Loyd cried in court on Monday as an expert discussed the bullet holes in Clayton’s vest.

So overcome, he turned to her widower, Seth Clayton, saying, “It told you I didn’t try to kill your wife, bro.”
Following the comment, the judge removed Loyd from the courtroom.

6:15 p.m. update
Court is in recess for the day. The judge said jury instructions will be worked on over night, and closing arguments are set to begin in the case Tuesday morning.
5:15 p.m. update
The state calls Dr. Tonia Warner, chief medical officer and vice president of medical services at Meridian Behavioral Healthcare, to the stand.

4:40 p.m. update
The state calls Dr. Michael Maher, physician and psychiatrist, to the stand.
2:35 p.m. update
Dr. Michael Gamache said on the stand that he does not believe Loyd met the criteria for insanity at the time of Clayton’s shooting.
1:50 p.m. update
Court is resuming following a lunch break.
The state calls Dr. Michael Gamache forensic psychologist and forensic neuropsychologist to the stand.

11:10 a.m. update
The defense rests its case. Rebuttal is now underway.
10 a.m. update
The state is continuing to call witnesses and investigators to the stand.
