COVID-19 case declining, omicron’s grip loosening in Orange County, officials say

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Numbers of COVID-19 cases are on the decline and omicron’s mark is decreasing across Orange County, officials said.

The Department of Health did not send a representative during Wednesday’s news conference and did not give a reason why.

The county said this is the first time that has happened in more than 170 of these news conferences.

Orange County continues to see positive developments in COVID-19 case numbers.

Mayor Jerry Demings returned from his own mild case of the virus.

Though omicron is still a prevalent strain in the county’s wastewater, officials said it is lessening.

The latest numbers show an 84% decrease in cases at all three testing facilities.

The county’s 14-day positivity rate dropped to just over 25% from a high of 40% in December. Demings reiterated that the county is not out of the woods yet, as long as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention still ranks the area as having one of the highest rates of transmissibility.

The county is still conducting a total of 5,000 tests each week. All of its testing locations, as well as the city’s Camping World Stadium site, will remain operational through the end of the month.
