Gov. Scott honors 200 veterans at ceremony in Orlando

ORLANDO, Fla. — Gov. Rick Scott spent the morning in Orlando honoring about 200 Florida veterans.

Scott handed out Governor's Veterans Service Awards at a ceremony at the National Guard Armory on South Ferncreek Avenue.

Scott said that Floridians shouldn't wait for a holiday's to celebrate our heroes. Scott placed the gold medals around the necks of each veteran and thanked them for their service.

"It was a duty I had to perform for my county. It makes me proud to be American. [I am] honored that the governor would take the time out of the active duty to come and honor the veterans," said World War II Army veteran Robert Schmidt.

The medals that were handed out were stamped with the Florida seal on one side and the five branches of the military on the other.

Scott began presenting the awards in August of 2013, and since then, he has presented over 6,500 medals.
