BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — Golfview Elementary Magnet School will be closed for the rest of the week “as a result of expanded cases of COVID-19 and to prevent further spread of the virus,” the district announced Tuesday evening.
Students who opted for brick-and-mortar learning will be moved to eLearning and pencil/paper packets, the district said. The school is expected to reopen on Sept. 8.
During the closure, a custodial team with support from the Office of Environmental Health and Safety will conduct a deep cleaning and disinfecting of the school.
The Department of Health has notified all families of children who were in close contact with individuals who were confirmed to have COVID-19, the district said.
The school district will continue to offer meals for families from 10 a.m. to noon at the school for the rest of the week.
Parents were notified late Tuesday via robocall from Brevard Public Schools that Golfview was closing for the rest of the week.
“We fully understand that the notification was later in the day,” said Katherine Allen, Brevard Public Schools media and publications coordinator. “This was our first school. However, the earlier we can notify, we will.”
The district said the decision to close the school wasn’t an easy one.
“There are a lot of layers to this, and we don’t make this decision in a bubble,” Allen said. “There’s a collaboration. The response team collaborates with the (Department of Health), examines each case and sees (if) it necessitates a school closure.”
Allen said the district aims to be transparent.
“It’s not a matter of if cases are going to happen, but when, and we have cases,” she said. “We’re in a global pandemic.”
Some staff members were on hand at the school Wednesday morning just in case parents missed the message.
