Orlando, Orange County mayors say they won’t ‘defund’ their police departments, will review policies instead
In a news conference on Monday, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings both said they are not considering defunding their police departments. They both say they’ll review training, policies and more, but Demings said changing any of that could actually cost more money.

Orange County Sheriff’s Office updates use of force policy
The Orange County Sherriff’s Office said it has updated its use of force policy. The change makes it so that deputies have a duty to intervene if they anticipate or observe the unreasonable, unnecessary or disproportionate use of force.
5:30 p.m. update
Nightly curfews lifted
The mayors of Orlando and Orange County said during a news conference that they have lifted the nightly curfews in the city and county.
The curfews were from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Legislators push for police overhaul
Thousands are lined up right now to say goodbye to George Floyd in his hometown of Houston, Texas.
The memorial, which is scheduled to go until 6 p.m. local time. comes as members of congress are pushing forward with sweeping legislation to overhaul policing in the U.S.
Floyd will be laid to rest in a private funeral on Tuesday.

Trump, Biden against defunding police
President Donald Trump and presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden have both released statements against defending police after it was announced Sunday that the Minneapolis City Council vowed to dismantle the city’s police department.
This year has seen the lowest crime numbers in our Country’s recorded history, and now the Radical Left Democrats want to Defund and Abandon our Police. Sorry, I want LAW & ORDER!

Biden spokesman Andrew Bates said that while the presidential hopeful is against defunding police departments, he “supports the urgent need for reform -- including funding for public schools, summer programs, and mental health and substance abuse treatment separate from funding for policing -- so that officers can focus on the job of policing.”

Floyd’s family, attorney ask UN to intervene in case
Attorney Ben Crump and the family of George Floyd are asking the United Nations “to intervene in the case of Floyd’s death and make recommendations for systemic police reform in the United States,” according to a news release issued Monday.
Crump and Floyd’s family issued the appeal last week in a letter to the UN Working Group on the Rights of People of African Descent, the release said.

Ex-Minneapolis police officer Chauvin set to make 1st court appearance
The former Minneapolis police officer accused of killing George Floyd is scheduled to make his first court appearance Monday.
Derek Chauvin, who faces second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter charges, will appear via video before a judge at 1:45 p.m.

5:41 a.m. update
Protest slated for City Hall
Demonstrators will continue to protest Monday afternoon in Orlando over the death of George Floyd.
Monday’s protest will begin at noon at City Hall.
Demonstrators also gathered at the same location to peacefully protest over the weekend.
