Florida student dies from meningitis

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — A Florida student attending Georgetown University has died from meningitis.

Andrea Jaime graduated from Coral Gables Senior High School. She was starting her sophomore year at Georgetown's school of nursing and health studies.

Georgetown Vice President for Student Affairs Todd Olson wrote in a letter addressed to all the university's students that Jaime died Tuesday from apparent meningitis. More test results are pending.

The Miami Herald reports that Georgetown held a memorial service for Jaime on Wednesday evening.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, bacterial meningitis is transmitted through close contact, primarily exchanging saliva from sharing drinks or cigarettes, or living in the same household. Most people who get the infection recover.
