Florida reports more than 7,700 new COVID-19 cases, 106 virus-related deaths

ORLANDO, Fla. — Florida health officials reported 7,711 new cases of COVID-19 as overall cases in the state continue to climb past 1 million.

To date, there have been 1,065,785 cases of COVID-19 reported in the state. Florida marks the third state to surpass the 1-million-cases milestone, joining Texas and California.

There were another 106 deaths linked to the virus, according to the Florida Department of Health. Of the recent deaths, 21 were reported in Central Florida. Volusia and Marion counties saw the most cases with nine and five, respectively.

The state’s death toll now stand at 19,529, according to the most recent report.

The Orange County Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act portal is set to reopen at 8 a.m. Tuesday. It could be the last time the portal opens this year.

The portal will allow 20,000 residents to apply for a $1,000 grant.

County officials said people living in the same household, including roommates and other family members, who’ve been impacted by COVID-19, are eligible to apply.

Residents needed the following to apply:

  • Photo ID
  • Social Security card
  • Documentation showing a loss of income

Any money that is left over will have to be turned over to the federal government.

Residents who have already received funding from Orange County’s CARES Act Individual and Family Assistance Program are not eligible to apply.

In vaccine news, pharmaceutical company Moderna said Wednesday it will begin testing its vaccine in children.

The study will include 3,000 children aged 12 to 17 years old, The New York Times reported. Half will be given two shots of a vaccine four weeks apart and the others a placebo of salt water.
