Florida reports more than 5,800 new COVID-19 cases, 52 virus-related deaths

ORLANDO, Fla. — Florida health officials reported 5,838 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday.

Of those cases, 1,147 were reported in Central Florida.

The new cases bring the state’s total number of cases to 858,012 since the pandemic began.

Florida also reported 52 more virus-related deaths. Of those deaths, six were reported in Central Florida.

The state’s death toll from the virus is now 17,512.

On Wednesday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revised its guidance on mask-wearing during the coronavirus pandemic.

Before this latest update, the CDC said masks prevented those infected from transmitting the virus to healthy people.

Now the CDC says that masks not only block those who have the virus from getting into the air but also filters potentially contaminated air from getting to an otherwise healthy person, CNN reported.
