Florida reports highest number of new COVID-19 cases since July

ORLANDO, Fla. — Florida health officials reported 11,335 new cases of COVID-19, marking the highest number of cases since July.

To date, there have been 1,094,697 cases of COVID-19 reported in the state. Florida marks the third state to surpass the 1-million-cases milestone, joining Texas and California.

There were another 135 deaths linked to the virus, according to the Florida Department of Health. Of the recent deaths, 48 were reported in Central Florida.

The state’s death toll now stand at 19,851, according to the most recent report.

With Florida possibly only days away from receiving its first doses of the much-anticipated COVID-19 vaccine, many people are wondering when they may be eligible to get the shot.

To give people across the country an idea of when they may be able to get vaccinated from the virus, The New York Times launched a tool for people to calculate where they fall in the long line of Americans looking to get vaccinated.

The FDA is meeting Thursday to discuss an emergency-use authorization for the Pfizer coronavirus vaccine.

The meeting, which started at 9 a.m., is expected to last several hours, and according to the agenda it will begin with presentations from the FDA and CDC on the latest vaccine research and data. Then doctors from Pfizer are expected to speak and answer questions.

The meeting will conclude with a final committee discussion and a vote.

Once approved, doses of the vaccine will begin shipping within 24 hours.

When that approval happens, AdventHealth Orlando will be one of the first in Florida to get doses.
