Florida reports 5K new COVID-19 cases as Publix administers 1 millionth vaccine dose in the state

ORLANDO, Fla. — Florida reported an additional 5,093 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, the same day Publix Pharmacy administered its 1 millionth dose of the COVID-19 vaccine in Florida.

The latest cases bring the total number in of cases in the state since the pandemic began to 1,994,117.

On Friday, the state also reported an additional 99 virus-related deaths, bringing the state’s total death toll to 33,219.

The increases come as Florida continues to expand its vaccination efforts.

Publix Pharmacy announced it had administered its 1 millionth dose of the vaccine in Florida on Thursday. That’s in addition to 140,000 doses administered at Publix locations in Georgia, South Carolina and Virginia.

“When Publix was approached to assist in administering these life-saving vaccines, we didn’t hesitate to say ‘Yes’ because we believe it is a privilege to care for our communities during a time of need,” said Publix CEO Todd Jones in a statement.
