Florida to consider rule restricting undocumented students from career programs

Florida Board of Education to consider new eligibility rules for career training students.

ORLANDO, Fla. — The Florida Board of Education is set to consider a proposed rule that would bar undocumented immigrants from enrolling in postsecondary career and technical education programs in the state.

The proposed rule was advanced Thursday and would require students applying for those programs to provide proof that they are U.S. citizens or legal residents.

Career and technical education programs offer training and skills designed to prepare students for careers in fields such as health care, construction, manufacturing and other industries.

The Board of Education is scheduled to consider the proposed rule during its Sept. 2 meeting.

If approved, the rule would add new eligibility requirements for students seeking admission to postsecondary career and technical education programs in Florida.
