Troopers responded to the crash along County Road 42 near Lazy Lake Road shortly after 7 p.m.

FHP said the impact happened when the driver of a 2015 Ford Mustang was traveling eastbound and attempted to pass traffic on a curve in the road while in a “no passing” zone.

Investigators said the Mustang was traveling above the posted speed limit when it struck an oncoming Mitsubishi Mirage heading westbound on CR-42.

Troopers said the Mustang then ran off the road and into the tree line. The driver, a 26-year-old Tavares man, was flown by helicopter to HCA Florida Lake Monroe Hospital with serious injuries, according to FHP.

A man driving the Mitsubishi and his passenger both died at the crash site, investigators said.
