FHP: 13-year-old bike rider dies after being hit by truck in Lake County

LAKE COUNTY, Fla. — A teenaged boy riding a bike died when he was hit by a truck in Lake County Thursday evening.

It happened just after 5 p.m. on State Road 19, south of Shockley Trail Rd. in Altoona.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the pickup truck was traveling southbound on State Road 19 as the teen was also riding his bike southbound on the shoulder of the highway.

For an unknown reason, troopers say the boy veered his bike directly into the path of the truck and was hit.

The bicyclist, identified only as a 13-year-old boy from Altoona, died at the scene. He was not wearing a helmet, according to a report from FHP.

Troopers say the truck driver remained at the scene. He was identified as a 33-year-old man from Oxford, FL.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
